🥦 Why I Left the Vegan Debate and Chose Food Freedom Instead

By Holly A. Randle, MSHE, BSN, RN

Let me just say this: I respect anyone doing
what they believe is best for their health and values. But after stepping into the world of veganism and plant-based eating, I quickly realized... the lifestyle isn’t the hard part the debate is.

Suddenly it wasn’t enough to enjoy more plants in my meals. I had to dodge online arguments about:

• “You’re not really vegan if you eat soy.”

• “Vegan meat is fake you’re being tricked.”

• “You shouldn’t cook meat for your kids if you’re plant-based.”

• “Don’t eat this. Take that supplement. Oh wait... never mind.”

It was exhausting.

And the pressure? It made eating something meant to nourish my body feel like a test I kept failing. One moment it's “just eat fruit and veggies.” The next it's “take 10 supplements and spend $$$ on organic-only or else…”

Let’s be real: health is not a contest. Wellness is personal. I still cook meat for my children, and I’ve chosen to give them the freedom to decide how they want to eat just like I’ve given myself.

What I’ve learned:

• You don’t have to subscribe to extremes to be healthy.

• Labels are limiting. Listen to your body, not internet bickering.

• Food shouldn’t create fear, guilt, or shame.

I’m no longer chasing “perfection.” I’m choosing peace with what’s on my plate and that’s a form of healing too.
